I wonder what happens when people realize you can slide the 5/8 hollow core rope over top of the 1/2 hollow rope after it's on the chain...
This gives you a 'disposable' outside wicking that you can cut off when it's burnt through, and leaves the inside rope to be absorbant wick material for fuel...
(though it is very difficult to get the outside rope on over the inside stuff.)

Hey. I have been thinking about making poi like this, and long story short, it wasnt until my brother wanted to make his own staff that i came across this tutorial. I will definitely use this tutorial

My first set of snakes was just unraveled 3/8" rope. The force from spinning would actually cause the outside of the rope to separate from the inside core where I held onto the ropes. A simple knot solved this problem.
We used to use the outer sleave from 1" kevlar rope in approx 2" lengths for fire eating wicks for our torches. The outer tube from the rope was easily sewed on both ends after stuffing the inside with kevlar filling. The result was a streamlined wick with no metal exposed.
I made a set of fire snakes. Here's the DIY video.
